This paper contextualises sport development through a specific focus on understanding sports coaching. This paper will introduce students to the social, contextual and practical issues framing the role and practice of coaching, as well as key theories, concepts and developments in the study of sport coaching.

The paper involves lecture content and online activities equivalent to four hours per week. Content and activities will be fully online for students to participate in.

This paper will involve a combination of lecture material (delivered primarily via screencasts) and online activities. Students are expected to complete readings in order to be able to contribute to discussions as part of in-class work.

Screencasts and activities will be available by 3pm on Tuesday. Any changes to these will be communicated well in advance.

This paper has an expectation of 40 in-class hours and 110 additional study/work hours. These 150 hours are a University wide requirement and reflects a professional commitment. Absences can create problems for both an individual’s learning progress but also for their student colleagues. If students are prevented from attending classes for any reason, and expect to be absent for more than four days, they should advise their lecturer. If students know in advance that they will be absent from a lecture, or if they unavoidably miss a class, the paper coordinator or lecturer should be advised.
